Dr Ramesh Manocha, MBBS BSc PhD, is a practising medico and researcher at the School of Women’s and Children’s Health, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia. He has national prominence as an educator and promoter of women’s and children’s health, adolescent wellbeing, complementary and traditional medicine. He is actively involved in professional education and health promotion in both the public and private sectors. He lectures to public and professional audiences internationally on his research, its practical, individual and social ramifications. In 1998 Dr Manocha established the Meditation Research Programme (MRP) at the Royal Hospital for Women, a teaching and tertiary referral hospital of the University of New South Wales. Its aim was the to determine whether or not meditation had an effect beyond that of placebo by using rigorous but practically focused research methodologies. At the outset this required a radical reassessment of the aims, definitions and extant data concerning meditation. Some of the “firsts” that the MRP has been instrumental in include: A systematic review and meta-analysis solely focused on RCTs of meditation, an evidence based evaluation of the ancient tradition of meditation as a form of consciousness characterised by “mental silence”, evaluation of whole populations of long term meditators, and a comprehensive study of the adverse effects of meditation. The MRP’s first 8 years of activity became the basis of Dr Manocha’s doctoral dissertation, which was awarded the highest possible score by its examiners in recognition of its unique and high quality contribution to the field. The MRP is particularly interested in the potential of non-commercialised forms of meditation as a mental health promotion and primary prevention strategy in a world where mental illness is becoming increasingly prevalent. The MRP has also had ongoing involvement in the development of evidence based meditation strategies for schools, workplaces and other organisations concerned with the performance and wellbeing of their people. The MRP is currently evaluating the potential of meditative interventions for the enhancement of resilience in school-children, to facilitate the progress of teenagers with drug and alcohol problems and as a stress management strategy for professionals. Future areas of focus for the MRP will be the biological underpinnings of the specific effects demonstrated in existing research as well as further exploration and quantification of how the “mental silence” state influences consciousness, health and behaviour.
